How is the average euro exchange rate calculated at the National Bank of Poland?

The average EUR exchange rate set by the National Bank of Poland is the reference value published in the exchange rate tables (you are most often interested in table A). It is determined based on information from the wholesale market at a specific moment of the day and serves as a reference point in settlements. This is not a margin trading rate so does not reflect the retail exchange cost.

What is the current EUR to PLN exchange rate?

The current EUR/PLN depends on whether you look at the reference rate (e.g. NBP, published cyclically), or on market quotations updated on an ongoing basis, or on purchase and sale rates at a bank or currency exchange office. In practical exchange, the ranges (buy/sell) and the spread are crucial, because they determine the real cost of the transaction.

What is the difference between the euro exchange rate from the National Bank of Poland and the exchange rate at currency exchange offices?

The NBP exchange rate is an average reference value from the tables and is sometimes used for settlements and comparisons, while currency exchange offices and banks show the buying and selling rates. In EUR, the differences result mainly from the spread and service costs, as well as from the fact that the transaction offer responds to current demand and liquidity. Therefore, the rate from the NBP table is not the "price" at which you can actually exchange the currency.

How to check the current EUR rate online?

The most practical way is to compare sources that show different types of exchange rates: the NBP table (reference value) and websites with market quotations. If the goal is to exchange, additionally check the buying and selling rates in the place you will actually use, because they take into account the spread and translate into the amount on hand.

What does the euro buying and selling rate mean?

The buying rate tells you at what price the institution will buy EUR from the client, and the selling rate tells you at what price it will sell it. The difference between these rates is the spread, which in the case of the euro can be relatively small compared to less popular currencies, but still affects the exchange result. The larger the amount, the more profitable it is to compare several offers.

What does the EUR exchange rate against the Polish zloty depend on?

EUR/PLN is influenced by, among others: expectations regarding interest rates in Poland and the euro zone, data on inflation and economic growth, and investor sentiment. In the short term, market liquidity and reactions to macroeconomic publications are also important, and in the longer term, differences in the pace of the economy and monetary policy on both sides are important.
