SEPA transfer in euro – how does it work and when is it worth using?

SEPA is a standard for transfers in euro executed between banks in countries belonging to the SEPA area (EU, EEA and several non-EU countries, including Switzerland and Great Britain). To place an order, the recipient's IBAN is enough, and the SEPA electronic transfer should usually arrive within 1 business day. This is a good solution for shopping in European e-shops, paying contractors' invoices or supporting loved ones on accounts kept in EUR. There is also a SEPA Instant version available - an instant transfer that is delivered in approximately 10 seconds (depending on the bank and limits), and in the EU its dissemination is accelerated by regulation. In short: when both parties have accounts in the SEPA zone and you pay in EUR, SEPA gives you fast, simple and usually cheap.

How long does a transfer in EUR between banks in the EU and Poland take?

A standard SEPA transfer usually arrives within 1 business day (sometimes up to 2 days). It will be faster if both banks support SEPA Instant - then the funds can arrive in a few seconds (usually with amount limits and not with all providers). The time of the order is also influenced by the time of the order (exceeding the so-called cut-off postpones the execution to the next day), weekends/holidays and possible currency conversion. When the recipient is outside the SEPA area or the transfer takes a different route (e.g. SWIFT), the time is usually extended to 3-5 business days. Many banks offer express modes - faster, but usually with a higher fee.

SHA or OUR when transferring in euro – which option should you choose and why?

If you are sending EUR within SEPA/EEA, please select SHA. The transfer follows the SEPA standard and there are practically no intermediary deductions, so the recipient gets the full amount and the cost on your side is usually the lowest. Outside SEPA/EEA or when you need to guarantee the full amount to the recipient (e.g. payment on invoice), choose OUR - all fees are paid by the sender, so nothing will be deducted along the way. In short: SEPA = SHA, outside SEPA or "the amount must match" = OUR.

What data is needed to make a transfer in EUR?

To make a transfer in EUR in the SEPA standard, you first provide the recipient's IBAN, his full name and address and the title of the transfer; the currency is euro. In classic SEPA, the BIC/SWIFT code is usually not needed because the recipient's bank is identified based on IBAN. If the transfer is made outside SEPA (SWIFT path) or the bank requires it, in addition to the IBAN, you must also enter the BIC/SWIFT code of the recipient's bank, the recipient's details along with the address, often also the bank's address, and indicate the invoice number or payment description in the title; the currency remains EUR. In the GLOBALtransfer panel you will see exactly which fields are mandatory for the selected track.

The most common problems with transfers in EUR and quick ways to solve them

Most often, the problem results from incomplete or incorrect data in the order (e.g. typo in IBAN or recipient's name). After sending the order, check the status in the GLOBALtransfer Transaction Panel; If you notice an error, please contact our support immediately before the transfer enters settlement. Delays also occur after exceeding the cut-off time, on weekends/holidays, during additional verification or on the part of the recipient's bank. If you are pressed for time, select the available accelerated mode in the panel (e.g. SEPA Instant, if supported) and place your orders before the cut-off. Additional costs most often result from currency conversion or shipping outside SEPA. To avoid them, order a payment from a EUR account and - for transfers in the SEPA zone - select the SHA cost option in the panel. For higher amounts, prepare documents confirming the purpose (e.g. invoice, contract) - this will speed up possible verification. If the transfer has not arrived within the expected time, check its route in the panel (SEPA/SWIFT) and contact GLOBALtransfer support to determine the stage of execution or start the appropriate procedure.
